Installing GFCI Outlets

GFCI outlets save lives by providing extra protection from electrocution by limiting the duration of electric shock.  Although GFCI’s can’t prevent electrocution they are able to stop the flow of electricity to the outlet once they have detected a leak in the electrical current.

A GFCI works by monitoring the amount of electricity passing through the device and returning back through it.  Once a difference in electricity is detected the device will immediately cut off power to the device which is often times referred to as a “trip”.

For example a properly functioning GFCI would cut off power or “trip” if someone was being electrocuted by the use of a faulty appliance or came in contact with some faulty wiring.  If a person was being electrocuted the electricity would run through the body of the person and into the ground instead of back into the device which the GFCI would detect and thereby cut off power at the outlet.

If a GFCI outlet was not installed and a person was being electrocuted then the power would not be cut off and serious injury or death could possibly occur.
